| Term | Definition |
| Weathering | a process that breaks down rock and other substances at Earth’s surface |
| Erosion | the movement of rock particles by water or wind |
| Deposition | the process in which transported sediment is laid down |
| Chemical Weathering | the breakdown of rocks by chemical reactions that change the rock’s make-up or composition. |
| Physical Weathering | the break up of rocks by physical forces such as ice, water, pressure release, root growth, and abrasion. |
| Nonrenewable resources | a resource that exists in a fixed amount or is used up faster than it can be replaced. |
| Renewable resources | A natural resource that can be replaced in nature at about the same rate that it is used up. |
| Conservation | The process of protecting or saving a natural resource. |
| Organic Matter | soil derived from living things |
| Soil Horizons | A soil layer with physical and chemical properties that differ from those of soil layers above and below it. |
| Soil Profile | The soil horizons in a specific location; a cross section of soil layers that displays all soil horizons. |
| Constructive Forces | Forces that build up Earth’s surface such as volcanic eruptions and deposition of sediment |
| Destructive Forces | forces that tear down or wear away Earth’s surface such as erosion |
| permeability | Soil's ability to let water and air pass through it. |
| delta | a land formation created by sediments deposited at the mouth of a river. |
