Question | Answer |
Cell cycle | The steps a cell goes through to grow, prepare for division, and divide to form two daughter cells. |
Mitosis | Part of eukaryotic cell division during which the cell nucleus divides. |
Asexual reproduction | Process of reproduction involving a single parent that results in offspring that are genetically identical to the parent. |
Somatic cell | A body cell. |
Centriole | Structure in an animal cell that helps with cell division. |
Spindle Fiber | Structure that separates the chromosomes into 2 daughter cells during cell division. |
Chromosome | Threadlike structure of DNA and protein that contains genetic information. In eukaryotes, they are found in the nucleus. |
Chromatid | One of two parts of a chromosome. |
Centromere | Region of a chromosome where the two sister chromatids attach. |
Chromatin | Substance found in eukaryotic chromosomes that consists of DNA tightly coiled around histones. |
Nuclear membrane | Controls what moves in and out of the nucleus. |
Interphase | Period of the cell cycle between cell division. |
Prophase | First and longest phase of mitosis in which the genetic material inside the nucleus condenses and the chromosomes become visible. |
Metaphase | Phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes line up across the middle of the cell. |
Anaphase | Phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes separate and move away to opposite ends of the cell. |
Telophase | Phase of mitosis in which individual chromosomes begin to spread out into a tangle of chromatin. |
Cytokinesis | Division of the cytoplasm to form 2 separate daughter cells. |
