Question | Answer |
we describe movement of the body parts in terms of.... | anatomical position |
flexion | reducing angle between bones (thin of the curled up guy) |
extension | increasing angle between bones (think of the arched out guy) |
hyperextension | further extension of joint past anatomical position |
lateral flexion | flexing to side |
medial flexion | flexing back up to the start |
dorsiflexion | flexing the dorsum up, toes point up |
plantar flexion | flexing sole of foot down/ toes point downward |
abduction | moving away from midline (in the frontal plane) think: "AB"solutely I want to make a snow angel!" |
example of flexion | flexing bicep |
example of extension | returning arm to starting point |
example of hyperextension | pushing head backward to look up |
elevation | structure moves superiorly (moving in frontal plane) |
depression | structure moves inferiorly (moving in the frontal plane) |
example of elevation | shrugging shoulders |
example of depression | bringing shoulders down after shrug |
protraction | structure moves anteriorly (moving on the transverse plane) |
retraction | structure moves posteriorly (moving on the transverse plane) |
example of protraction? | push jaw foward |
example of retraction? | bring jaw back |
lateral excursion | moving mandible side to side |
medial excursion | bringing mandible back to midline |
circumduction | proximal end of the appendage remains relatively stationary, while distal end makes circular motion |
rotation | turning of a bone around its long axis |
lateral rotation | turn away from midline |
medial rotation | turn toward midline |
examples of rotation? | rotate head, or humerus. |
supination | turns palm to face anteriorly/upward (think holding cup of SOUP) |
pronation | turns palm to face posteriorly/downward (think you are "prone" to be in most comfy position) |
opposition | tip of thumb goes to tips of other fingers (think "opposable" thumb) |
reposition | return thumb to normal position |
inversion | sole of foot turns medially |
eversion | sole of foot turns laterally |
