Question | Answer |
Precordium | The portion of the body over the heart and lower chest |
Stroke Volume (SV) | The amount of blood pumped out of a ventricle during one contraction |
Cardiac Output (CO) | The amount of blood pumped out of a ventricle in one minute |
P Wave | Atrial Depolarization - conduction of the impulse throughout the atria |
QRS Complex | Ventricular Depolarization - conduction of the impulse throughout the ventricles |
T Wave | Ventricular Repolarization - ventricles return to resting state |
Preload | End-diastolic stretch of heart muscle fiber. Approximately equal to the end-diastolic volume or pressure |
Afterload | The forces that impede the flow of blood out of the heart. Composed of pressure in peripheral vasculature, compliance of the aorta, and the mass/viscosity of the blood. |
Compliance | The ease with which the heart muscle relaxes as it fills with blood |
Contractility | The force with which the left ventricle contraction occurs. It is independent of the effects of preload or afterload |
