vertebrae | The bones that make up the backbone of an animal. |
marrow | The soft tissue that fills the internal spaces in bone; it produces blood cells. |
cartilage | A connective tissue that is more flexible than bone and that gives support to some parts of the body. |

ligament | Strong connective tissue that holds together the bones in a movable joint. |
osteoporosis | A condition in which the body's bones become weak and break easily. |
skeletal system | System of bones and cartilage that helps to support and protect the body. |
periosteum | Thin membrane that covers the bone. |
compact bone | Mostly solid, dense part of a bone. |
spongy bone | Part of a bone with many small pores or spaces. |
fracture | Crack or break in a bone. |
