What an septal defect?   A hole between either the 2 atria or the 2 ventricles

What are the signs and symptoms of CHF?   Increased heart rate and respiratory rates, respiratory congestion, wet cough, SOB, exercise intolerance, crackles, diaphoresis, and possible hepatomegaly and hemepotysis.

Interventions for CHF?   Possible fluid restriction, reduced activity, ensure child maintains a normal temp to prevent cold stress and increased work load of the heart, possibly antibiotics to prevent endocarditis.

Signs and symptoms of a cyonotic heart defect?   dusky appearance around the mouth, clubbed digits, increased pulse, increased resp rate, squatting position, short periods of loss of consciousness.

Examples of cyanotic heart conditions?   Transposition of great vessels, Tetralogy of Fallot, Pulmonic Stenosis, Aortic stenosis.

Name an acquired heart disease?   Rheumatic Fever.

What causes Rheumatic Fever?   An infection caused by group A beta hemolytic strep. Usually of the respiratory tract. A few weeks later the body has a hyperactive response and the antibodies attack the heart and other connective tissue.

What are the symptoms of Rheumatic Fever?   Tachycardia with out temp, cardiomegaly, new murmur, precordial pain, muffled heart sounds, migratory polyarthritis, Chorea, large erythematous rash with clear center and wavy demarcated border, subcutaneous nodules on the joints of the hands.

What are the interventions for Rheumatic Fever?   Penicillin is administered possibly until adult hood to prevent future attacks. Decrease work load of the heart.
