Active Ingredient   Chemical found in the medication known or believed to have a therapeutic effect.

Admixture   A substance produced by mixing two or more substances.

Aerosol   A medication dosage form that contains a gaseous substance consisting of a fine liquid or solid.

Capsule   A solid dosage form of medication usually made of gelatin, which holds fine particles of a solid or liquid particle.

Chewable Tablet   Tablets that are chewed instead of swallowed whole.

Compound   Refers to substances made from a combination of two or more substances.

Cream   A liquid dosage form of a medication that is a semisolid preperation, usually applied externally to soothe, lubricate, or protect.

Effervescent Tablet   A tablet that is dissolved into liquid before administration.

Elixir   A liquid dosage form that contains flavored water and alcohol mixtures.

Emulsion   A liquid dosage form of a mixture of two products that normally DO NOT mix together.

Inactive Ingredients   The remaining ingredients, other than the active ingredients that are found in a drug; used to flavo, digest, color, and bind the whole substance.

Liniment   Medications that are applied to the skin with friction and running. Liniments can be a solution, suspension, or emulsions.

Lotion   A liquid dosage form that contains a powdered substance in a suspension, used externally to soothe, cool, dry, and protect.

Ointment   A semisolid (mixture of a liquid and solid) dosage form that is applied externally to deliver medication, lubricate, and protect.

Patch   A dosage form in which the medication is delivered through a solid application applied to the skin and absorbed into the bloodstream.

Solution   A liquid dosage form in which medication is completely dissolved in a liquid.

Suppository   Denoted the administration through the vagina or rectum of a solid medication.

Suspension   A liquid dosage form in which the solid particles are not completely dissolved.

Syrup   A liquid form that consists of water and sugar mixed with the medication.

Tablet   Is a solid dosage form in which the ingredients are compacted into a small, formed shape pill.
