3. Oculomotor   Adjacent to midbrain. Moves eyes up and down and laterally. Pupillary reaction. Ptosis, look up, down, medially.

5. Trigeminal   3 branches: opthalmic, maxillary, mandibular, origin adjacent to pons. Chewing, sensory for face, teeth, mouth and eyes.

6. Abducens   Distributed to lateral rectus muscle of eyeball. Abducts eyes to ear. Most sensitive to ICP.

7. Facial   5 branches distributed to anterior 2/3 of tongue, facial, scalp and neck muscles, lacrimal and salivary glands. Facial expression, closes eyelids, secretion of tears, salivation. Have patient smile, raise eyebrows, close eyelids against resistance.

8. Vestibulocochlear (acoustic)   Adjacent to CN VII, semicircular canals and cochlea of ear. Hearing, equilibrium, audiometry, and balance. Romberg and hearing.

9. Glossopharyngeal   Posterior 1/3 of tongue, pharynx muscles, parotid gland. Salivation, swallowing, taste, speech, monitors carotid bodies and sinus. Have patient open up and say ah, check uvula rise and fall, and gag.

10. Vagus   Adjacent to medulla. Lifts palate, swallowing, coughing, voice production, test with glossopharyngeal. Aortic pressure, slows heart rate, stimulates digestive organs, taste.

11. Spinal Accesssory   Muscles of trapezius, sternocleidomastoid, pharynx, larynx and soft palate. Shrug shoulders against resistance, swallow.

12. Hypoglossal   Distributed to tongue muscles. Moves tongue, speech and swallowing.
