Superego   The superego is the conscience of the psyche and monitors the ego. The superego says, "I should/ I ought." ( Hunt 1994) Relates to age 7 and above

Topographic Model of the Mind   Freud's topographic model deals with levels of awareness and is divided into three categories : Unconscious mind, Preconscious mind and Conscious mind .

Unconscious Mind   All mental content and memories outside of conscious awareness; becomes conscious through the preconscious mind. Can not access the info .

Preconscious Mind   Not with in the conscious mind but can be more easily brought to conscious awareness ( repressive function of instinctual desires or udersirable memories). Reaches consciousness through word linkage. Not easily accessed .

Conscious Mind   All content and memories immediately available and within conscious awareness. Of lesser importance to psychoanalysts. Ego controled - easy accessed.

Freud's Psychosexual Development   5 stages : Oral , Anal, Phallic , Latency , Genital

0 - 18 months   Oral - Oral gratification

18 mo- 3 years   Anal - Independence and control ( voluntary sphincter control)

3- 6 years   Phallic - Genital focus. Child becomes interested in his or her own sexual organs

6 - 12 years   Latency - Repressed sexuality; channeled sexual drives ( sports ) Stage during which sexual urges often appear to lie dormant.

13- 20 years   Genital - Puberty with sexual interest in opposite sex
