Atypical Features Specifier   Applied to most recent MDE (2 weeks) or DD (2 years). Mood reactivity plus 2 of weight gain or increased appetite; hypersomnia; leaden paralysis; pattern of interpersonal rejection sensitivity that causes impairment. No Melancholic, no Catatonic.

Postpartum Onset Specifier   Most recent MDE, ME, MxE in MDD, BPI or BPII or to Brief Psychotic Disorder; Onset of episode within 4 weeks postpartum.

Longitudinal Specifiers   Recurrent MDD, BPI, BPII: With Full Interepisode Recovery: full remission between 2 most recent episodes; Without Full Interepisode Recovery: full remission is not attained between 2 most recent episodes.

Seasonal Pattern Specifier   Pattern of MDE in BPI, BPII, and MDD, Recurrent: Regular onset and remission at certain times of year, not related to seasonal stressors. 2 years of 2 seasonal MDE, no nonseasonal. Seasonal MDE outnumber nonseasonal over lifetime.

Rapid-Cycle Specifier   Applied to BPI or BPII: At least four episodes of a mood disturbance in the previous 12 months that meet criteria for MDE, ME, MxE, or HE. Separated either by partial or full remission for at least 2 months or a switch to opposite polarity.
