Question
Answer
Biofeedback is a modality that   uses an electromechanical device to provide visual and/or auditory feedback.
🗑
Biofeedback can be utilized to   receive information related to motor performance, kinesthetic performance or physiological response.
🗑
Biofeedback can measure   peripheral skin temperature, changes in blood volume through vasodilation and vasoconstriction using finger phototransmission, sweat gland activity, and electrical activity during muscle contraction.
🗑
Electromyographic biofeedback is   the most commonly used biofeedback modality in the clinical setting.

🗑
Contraindications   Any condition where muscle contraction is detrimental
🗑
Contraindications   Skin irritation at electrode site
🗑
Prior to treatment the therapist should   ensure that the patientʼs skin is clean and dry.
🗑
The two active electrodes should be placed   parallel to the muscle fibers and close to each other.
🗑
The reference or ground electrode can be placed   anywhere on the body, but is often secured between the two active electrodes.
🗑
The signals are transmitted to a   differential amplifier and information is conveyed through visual and audio feedback.
🗑
The treatment for muscle re-education should begin with the patient   performing a maximal muscle contraction.
🗑
re-ed The sensitivity of the biofeedback unit   should be set at a low sensitivity setting and adjusted so that the patient can perform the repetitions at a ratio of two-thirds of the maximal muscle contraction.
🗑
re-ed Treatment duration for a single muscle group is   five to ten minutes.
🗑
The treatment for muscle relaxation requires a   high sensitivity setting and a similar electrode placement with active electrodes initially positioned close to each other.
🗑
As the patient improves with relaxation,   the electrodes should be placed further apart and the sensitivity setting increased.
🗑
relaxition-During this treatment,   the patient may also benefit from adjunct relaxation techniques such as imagery.
🗑
Treatment duration of 10 to 15 minutes is usually adequate   to attain relaxation.
