Question
Answer
Element   The basic building blocks of all matter. They are pure substances and cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
🗑
Substance   One type of matter.
🗑
Compound   Any substance that is formed by a chemical combination of two or more elements. Can only be broken apart into similar substances by chemical reaction. They have different properties thatn the elements that make them up.
🗑
Chemical Formula   symbols for compounds
🗑
Subscripts   Numbers below the element symbols. It tells us the number of particals that combine in the compound.
🗑
Atomic number   the number of protons in an atom determins what element it is.
🗑
Neutral   an atom that has the same number of protons and electrons.
🗑
Positive charge   when an atom looses electrons and is left with more protons.
🗑
Negitive charge   when an atom gains electrons and is left with more electrons.
🗑
Repel   atoms with the same charge. They push apart
🗑
attract   atoms with opposite charges. they move together.
🗑
positive and positive atoms   repel
🗑
negitive and positive atoms   attract
🗑
Nutral   either a positive or a negitive charge will attract this type of atom.
🗑
N- or N+   attract
🗑
Molecules   particles that contain more than one atom joined together.
🗑
Molecules of elements   always contain only one kind of atom.
🗑
Molecules of compounds   have different kinds of atoms joined together.
🗑
Atom   the smallest unit of an element that has the same properties of the element. So small they cannot be seen through a regular microscope
🗑
Nucleus   the center ball that holds positive neutrons
🗑
Protons   equal one positive charge (+)
🗑
Neutrons   equal no charge
🗑
Electrons   equal one negative charge (-)
