| Element | The basic building blocks of all matter. They are pure substances and cannot be broken down into simpler substances.

| Compound | Any substance that is formed by a chemical combination of two or more elements. Can only be broken apart into similar substances by chemical reaction. They have different properties thatn the elements that make them up.

| Positive charge | when an atom looses electrons and is left with more protons.

| Atom | the smallest unit of an element that has the same properties of the element. So small they cannot be seen through a regular microscope

| Nucleus | the center ball that holds positive neutrons

| Protons | equal one positive charge (+)

| Electrons | equal one negative charge (-)
