globe   a small representation of Earth in the shape of a sphere

compass rose   a symbol on a map that shows directions

latitude   imaginary lines on a map or globe that run west to east and show distance from the Equator (also called parallels)

longitude   imaginary lines on a map or globe that run north to south and show distance from the Prime Meridian (also called meridians)

legend or map key   shows what each symbol on a map means

Equator   the imaginary line that runs west to east, and cuts the Earth into the northern and southern hemispheres

Prime Meridian   the imaginary line that runs north to south, and cuts the Earth into the western and eastern hemispheres

map grid   a system used to locate places on a map by dividing the map into squares (simplified version of latitude & longitude)

cardinal directions   north, south, east, west
