CRIES   pain indicator used in neonatal intensive care. *Crying *Requiring increased O2 *Increased vital signs *Expression *Sleeplessness Pain score greater than 4 is considered significant. 32 weeks gestation to 20 weeks postterm.

Neonatal infant pain scale (NIPS)   33.5 gestational weeks, scale is 0-7 variables: facial expression, arms, cry, legs, breathing pattern, state of arousal.

Premature infant pain profile (PIPP)   28-40 gestational weeks, scale of 0-21. Variables: gestational age, eye squeeze, behavioral state, nasolabial furrow, heart rate, O2 stat, brow bulge.

neonatal pain, agitation, and sedation scale (NPASS)   23 weeks gestation and full term newborns up to 100 days. Scale of 0-10. Variables: cry/irritability, behavior/state, facial expression, extremities/tone, vital signs.

FLACC   pain scale uses behavioral approach that observes the child's face, legs, activity, cry, and consolability and is supported for use in children with CI.

manifestations of acute pain in neonates (physiologic)   increased HR and BP, rapid shallow resp, decreased O2, pallor or flushing, sweating, increased muscle tone, dilated pupils, decreased vagal nerve tone, increase ICP. LABS: hyperglycemia, low pH, high corticosteroids.

acute pain in neonates (behavioral)   crying, whimpering, groaning, grimace, brow furrowed, chin quivering, eyes tightly closed, mouth open and squarish, limb withdrawal, thrashing, rigidity, flaccidity, fist clench, change in: sleep-wake, feeding, activity level.
