client edu: withdrawal effects are common w/short term use.
for client who use med long/term, taper over several weeks.

contraindications of benzodiazephines | preg cat. D - don't give to pregnant or lactating women
These meds are control substance. caution w/older adults, client w/liver disease or w/hx of mental illness or a substance use disorder. Med should be used short term d/t risk of dependency.

Interactions w/benzodiazephines | CNS depressant: avoid alcohol, barbiturates, opioids d/t resp. dep.
avoid anticonvulsants, antihistamines d/t increases CNS depression
grapefruit juice can reduce metabolism
high-fat meals can reduce absorption

RN administration for benzodiazephines | take med as prescribed, w/meals or snacks, at bedtime
taper dose over several weeks
notify HCP for withdrawal effects
keep med in a secure place d/t their potential for abuse
