Drug Dependence   Drug dependence is a state of neuroadaptation (a physiologic change in the central nervous system [CNS]) caused by the chronic, regular administration of a drug.

Drug Addiction   Drug addiction is a pattern of abuse characterized by an overwhelming preoccupation with the use (compulsive use) of a drug, securing its supply, and a high tendency to relapse if the drug is removed.

Alcoholism   Alcoholism is addiction to the drug called alcohol.

Psychoactive Drugs   These drugs, which can alter emotions, are used for enjoyment in social and recreational settings and for personal use to self-medicate physical or emotional discomfort.

Depressives   Depressants are drugs that slow down the activity of the central nervous system.

Stimulants   Stimulants increase activity of the body and are frequently pleasurable and invigorating.

Hallucinogens   A hallucinogen is a psychoactive agent, which can cause hallucinations, perceptual anomalies, and other substantial subjective changes in thoughts, emotion, and consciousness.

Inhalants   Inhalants are volatile substances that produce chemical vapors that can be inhaled to induce a psychoactive, or mind-altering, effect.

Substance Abuse   Substance abuse is the use of any substance that threatens a person's health or impairs social or economic functioning.
