---|---|---|---|---|---|
Cell | the smallest functional and structural unit of all living things
🗑
Organism | any living thing
🗑
Cell membrane | a protective layer that covers a cell's surface and acts as a barrier between the inside of a cell and the cell's environment
🗑
Cytoplasm | the region enclosed by the cell membrane that includes the fluid and all of the organelles of the cell
🗑
Organelle | a small body in a cells cytoplams that is specialized to perform a specific function
🗑
Nucleus | where DNA is located in Eukaryote
🗑
Prokaryote | a single celled organism that does not have a nucleus or membrane bound organelles. Its DNA is located in the cytoplasm.
ex: bacteria, archaea
🗑
Eukaryote | an organism made up of cells that contain their DNA in a nucleus. ex: animals, plants, protists, and fungi
🗑
Robert Hooke | First person to describe cells. He built a microscope to look at tiny objects.
🗑
Cell theory | Three basic characteristics of all cells and organisms:
All organisms are made up of one or more cells
The cell is the basic unit of all organisms
All cells come from existing cells
🗑
Anton van Leeuwenhoek | The first person to describe actual living cells when he looked at a drop of pond water under a microscope.
🗑
Unicellular | organisms made up of only one cell
the single cell must carry out all of the functions for life
🗑
Multicellular | organisms made up of more than one cell
the cells often have specialized functions

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.
To hide a column, click on the column name.
To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.
You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.
Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
