| Friable | A term to describe the modification of a barley seed. Well modified, friable seeds are crunchy when chewed while poorly modified seeds are hard.

| Steeping | The soaking of barley seeds to increase moisture to 45% and so initiate germination.

| Kilning | The drying of germinated barley to reduce moisture to 4% and stabilize it for mashing.
