Question
Answer
What significance would a scant/light growth of yeast have if grown from a culture?   Generally normal flora or a "colonizer" if grown in small amount and is considered non-pathogenic.
🗑
What other organism can be confused with a culture of yeast on a BAP? How would you differentiate the two?   Young yeast colonies (mainly Candida glabrata) grow in very small pin-point colonies and can easily be confused with Lactobacillus. To quickly differentiate the two you could perform a gram stain to observe morphology or a wet mount.
🗑
Most yeasts grow well at what temperature? What species would be an exception?   Most grow well between 30-37 C - C. krusei - 42C - Geotrichum - 25C
🗑
What can be used to presumptively identify certain yeast species?   Colony morphology on ChromAgar - most species have distinct pigmentation that can be used to identify: - C. albicans - green - C. glabrata - mauve - C. krusei - rose-pink, spready - C. tropicalis - blue, sometimes metallic
🗑
What does Geotrichum look like on a gram stain?   - Has true hyphae that almost look like GPR - Looks similar to Clostridium perfringens when stained
