Science Chapter 5

        Help!

Question
Answer
a species that no longer exists   extinct
🗑
a scientist who studies fossils   paleontologist
🗑
all the living and nonliving things in an environment   ecosystem
🗑
the remains or marks of an animal/plant that lived long ago   fossil
🗑
the area or place where an animal lives   habitat
🗑
ecosystems of North America   tundra, grassland, desert, wetlands, rainforest
🗑
Name the steps in which a fossil is formed.   1. animal dies, sinks to the bottom of a lake.the soft part decays. 2. Sand, mud and other sediments settle on top of the animal. 3. More layers of sediments form. sediment hardens into rock. 4. Rock layers wear away and the fossil is revealed
🗑
a resource that can be replaced   renewable resource
🗑
a resource that cannot be replaced   nonrenewable resource
🗑
two or more living things need the same resources in order to survive   competition
🗑
all the members of one species that live within an ecosystem   population
🗑
tells us how plants and animals have changed over time   fossils
🗑
a fossil such as a footprint or nest that shows how an animal lived   trace fossil
🗑
supplies found in nature   natural resources
🗑
How do humans cause changes in an environment.   They clear trees, which include animals homes, to build houses. They pollute the environment in which animals live.
🗑
What do many organisms have that help them survive in their habitats?   special structures
🗑
Give an example of plants changing the environment   purple loofestrife grows and takes over space where other plants that animals might eat could grow
🗑
What is erosion?   the movement of worn away rocks and soil
🗑
What is ore?   a rock with many valuable minerals that are found below the Earth's surface.
🗑
Why is conserving fossil fuels important?   Burning fossil fuels can cause pollution Conserving fossil fuels help them last longer
🗑
How do fossils form?   plant or animal dies and are buried under layers of sediment Sediment hardens into rock and keeps the shape of buried plant or animal
🗑
Where do body fossils of an insect form? Explain how these fossils form.   They form in amber. The animial becomes trapped in sticky tree sap. The sap surrounds the animal and hardens in to amber over time. Almost all of the animal's body is preserved.
🗑
What is sediment?   Sediment is bits of rock, sand, shell and other material that harden into rock.
🗑
What are two ways scientists determine the age of fossils?   fossils found in deeper layers of rock are older determining how quickly materials in the fossil change
🗑
What is the geologic time scale?   A timeline of the history of Earth
🗑
Where do most fossil fuels come from?   the remains of organisms that lived millions of years ageo and are not renewable or easily replaced.
🗑

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.

To hide a column, click on the column name.

To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.

You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.

Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
If you know all the data on any row, you can temporarily remove it by tapping the trash can to the right of the row.
