Term
Definition
Organism   a living thing
🗑
Vascular Plant   has a system of tubes that carry water and nutrients throughout the plant.
🗑
Non vascular Plant   Does not have tubes. Usually grow close to the ground or moist places.
🗑
Spore   a plant cell that grows into another plant cell. Example of asexual reproduction.
🗑
Vertebrate   An animal that has a back bone
🗑
Invertebrate   An animal that does not have a back bone
🗑
Adaptation   Any feature that helps an organism survive in its enviroment
🗑
Fossil   The remains, trace, or print of an organism that lived in a past age.
🗑
Cell   Basic unit of life.
🗑
Nucleus   Control center of a cell
🗑
Cell membrane   Protect the cell and controls what enters and leaves
🗑
Cell Wall   Supports the cell; only found in plant cells
🗑
Cytoplasm   Contains organelles
🗑
Chloroplast   Uses the sun's energy to make food for the cell; only found in plants.
🗑
Organelle   a small structure that does a certain job in a cell.
🗑
Unicellular   An organism made of only one cell.
🗑
Multicellular   An organism made of two or more cells
🗑
Respiratory System   Takes in oxygen. Main organ in the lungs
🗑
Digestive System   Breaks down food. Main organ in the stomach
🗑
Circulatory System   Carries oxygen, food, and waste throughout the body in the blood. Main organ is the heart.
🗑
Skeletal System   Gives the body support and protect the organs. Main organ is the bones.
🗑
Muscular System   Allows the body to move. Main organ is the muscles
🗑
Nervous System   Controls all the other systems in the body. Main organ is the brain.
🗑
Sexual Reproduction   Reproduction with two parents. Male and female parts.
🗑
Asexual Reproduction   Reproduction with only one parent
🗑
Budding   An example of asexual reproduction. A new plant grows from a "bud" off the parent plant. Ex. Potato
🗑
Vegetative Propagation   An example of asexual reproduction. A new plant grows from a "runner" of the parent plant. Ex. Strawberry plant
🗑
Producer   An organism that makes it's own food. Ex. Plants
🗑
Consumer   An organism that cannot make their own food and must get energy from eating other organisms.
🗑
Herbivore   An organism that eats only plants
🗑
Carnivore   An organism that eats only animals
🗑
Omnivore   An organism that eats both plants and animals
🗑
Decomposer   An organism that gets energy by breaking down dead organisms
🗑
Food Chain   A model that shows the flow of energy from one organism
🗑
Food Web   Several food chains connected
