Cell Division and Sex-Cell Formation: Mitosis and Meiosis

Quiz yourself by thinking what should be in each of the black spaces below before clicking on it to display the answer.
        Help!

Term
Definition
Chromosome   Thread-like structure in a cell that contains genetic information
🗑
Mitosis   Process by which a cell divides into two identical daughter cells.
🗑
Chromatid   one of the identical halves that makes up a chromosome. Each chromosome is made up of two halves that have the same genetic information.
🗑
Centromere   Structure that hold together each pair of chromatids
🗑
Gamete   Specialized reproductive cells involved in sexual reproduction.
🗑
Diploid Cell   A cell that has a double set of chromosomes... one set from each parent.
🗑
Haploid Cell   A cell that contains only a single set of chromosomes.
🗑
Meiosis   Process whereby special cells divide to form the sex cells. These sex cells are called haploids because they have half the number of chromosomes.
🗑
Homologous Chromosomes   Description of chromosomes that occur in pairs.
🗑
Crossing Over   Process by which a pair of chromosomes (homologous chromosomes) change portions of their genetic material.

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.

To hide a column, click on the column name.

To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.

You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.

Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
If you know all the data on any row, you can temporarily remove it by tapping the trash can to the right of the row.
