Definition
Confucianism   Widely influenced Chinese culture and beliefs. Its primary purpose is to achieve harmony through well defined roles. Control of emotions, restraint, obedience to authority, and conforming are highly important and practiced.

Yin Yang Theory   Cold-hot theory. Yin is female, negativity or cold energy while Yang is the male, positivity and hot energy. Illnesses are caused by an imbalance of yin and yang. Food may also be yin or yang, and a good balance of these is required to maintain health.

Five Elements   Wood, fire, earth, metal, water. These five elements are also a balance in order to attain optimum health and well being.

Psychosomatic Integration   Chinese believe that each illness and emotion is related to a body part or an organ that may have been imbalanced or working improperly.

Buddhism   Influence of Buddhism on Chinese culture: They believe that a wrongdoing or a certain illness will bring shame to the family, thus patients may not admit certain illnesses, especially mental health problems, since this may bring shame to their families.

Taoism   Emphasizes the mystical aspects of human nature, such as cleanliness, selflessness, emotional calm and harmony.

Karma   Belief that it is bad luck if a certain disease or illness is discussed as this may cause it to happen. Belief that what you do to others will have an impact on yourself and well-being.
