Weight   The measure of the gravitational force on an object.

Element   This is made up of one or more of the same kind of atom chemically combined.

Mixture   Contains a variety of elements and compounds that are not chemically combines with each other.

Compound   Made up of different kinds of atoms chemically combined.

Electron   A subatomic particle that has a negative charge. (-)

Chemical Symbol   A one, two, or three letter abbreviation of the name of an element. Examples Ca, O, and N.

Proton   Subatomic particle that has a positive charge and is located in the nucleus of the atom. (+)

Neutron   A subatomic particle that has no charge.

Atomic Number   The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. This is the same number for all atoms of an element.

Pure Substance   A sample of matter, either a single element of a single compound, that has a definite chemical and physical properties.

Atom   The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element. The building block of matter

Density   The ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of a substance. D=M/V

Mass   It describes the amount of matter in an object.

Matter   Anything that has mass and takes up space.

Physical Property   A characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance. Types are density, conductivity, solubility, malleability, magnetic, melting points, hardness.

Volume   The amount of space that an object takes up, or occupies. V=M/D or V=lwh

Chemical Property   A characteristic that describes a substance's ability to change into a new substance with different properties. Types include flammability, reactivity with other substances, ability to ruse.
