Question
Answer
What is ecology?   The study of the interactions that occur among organisms and their environment.
🗑
What is an ecologist?   A scientist who studies ecology.
🗑
What is a biosphere?   A portion of the Earth in which all life exists.
🗑
What are the levels of organization, for our living environment, from smallest to largest?   individual, population, community, ecosystem, biome, biosphere.
🗑
What is a species of organisms?   A group of organisms that are so similar to each other that they produce fertile offspring.
🗑
Why can't the offspring of two different species reproduce?   The offspring would be sterile. This means they produce no male or female sex cells and cannot reproduce. For example, when a donkey and a horse produce a mule, the mule is sterile. Or when a lion and a tiger produce a liger, the liger is sterile.
🗑
What is an organism?   Any living life form.
🗑
What is a population?   A group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area.
🗑
What is a community?   A group of different populations that live together in a defined area.
🗑
What is an ecosystem?   The collection of all organisms that live in a particular place, together with their nonliving physical environment.
🗑
What is a biome?   A group of ecosystems that have the same climate and similar dominant communities.
🗑
What is the Marine biome?   saltwater environments, made up of the ocean and seas
🗑
What is the Terrestrial biome?   made of large landmasses
🗑
What is the Tundra?   The biome with permanently frozen subsoil. Life includes the snowy owl, caribou, lichens, moss, grasses.
🗑
What is the Taiga?   The biome with long severe winters, yet has a thawing of the subsoil. Life includes moose, black bear, conifers, ferns, pines.
🗑
What is the Temperate Deciduous Forest?   The biome in which we live. In this biome there is moderate precipitation, cold winters, long summers, and trees that loose their leaves. Life includes grey squirrel, fox, deer, oak, maple, elm.
🗑
What is the Tropical Rain Forest?   The biome in which there is HEAVY rainfall and constant warmth, . Life includes snakes, monkeys, and broad leaf plants.
🗑
What is the Grassland?   The biome in which there is much variability in rainfall and temperature and has strong winds. Life includes antelope, bison, prairie dogs, grasses.
🗑
What is the Desert?   The biome with little rainfall and extreme daily temperature changes. Life includes lizards, drought resistant shrubs, cactus.
🗑
What are biotic factors?   Biological (living) influences and all the living things that an organism interacts with. For example, birds, trees, mushroom, bacteria.
🗑
What are abiotic factors?   Physical or non-living factors that shape an ecosystem. For example, sunlight, temperature, precipitations, soil types.
