Question
Answer
force to make convergent boundaries   compression
🗑
force to make divergent boundaries   tension
🗑
force to make transform boundaries   shearing
🗑
describe the movement of the plates in a convergent boudary   pushing together
🗑
describe the movement of the plates in a divergent boudary   pulling apart
🗑
describe the movement of the plates in a transform boudary   moving in opposite directions
🗑
are convergent boudaries constructive or destructive?   destructive
🗑
are divergent boudaries constructive or destructive?   constructive
🗑
are transform boudaries constructive or destructive?
🗑
whats a constructive boundary?   a bounday where new crust is created
🗑
whats a destructive boundary?   a bounday where crust is destroyed or changed
🗑
what force causes a normal fault?   tension
🗑
what force causes a reverse fault?   compression
🗑
what force causes a strike-slip or lateral fault?   shearing
🗑
theory of continental drift   continents have moved slowly to their current locations
🗑
who originated the idea of continental drift?   alfred wegner
🗑
what is the name of the super continent?   pangea
🗑
evidence that supports continental drift   puzzlelike fit of the continents; fossil evidence; rock and climate clues
🗑
seafloor spreading   ocean floor is pushed aside on both sides of Magma comes up through the mid ocean ridge and flows sideways carrying the ocean floor with it.
🗑
who's idea was seafloor spreading?   Harry Hess
🗑
lithosphere   Rigid layer of the crust and upper part of the mantle. Divided into plates
🗑
asthenosphere   Plastic like layer of Earth (in the mantle) on which the lithospheric plates float and move.
🗑
composite volcanoes   steep sides; sometimes erupt violently
🗑
cinder cone volcanoes   small cone formed by tephra; moderate violent eruptions
🗑
shield volcanoes   sloping sides; largest type of volcano basaltic lava
🗑
subduction   a dense oceanic plate converges wit a less dense continental plate and the oceanic plate sinks under the continental plate
🗑
tsunami   Powerful seismic sea waves that begin over an ocean floor earthquake
🗑
what causes a tsunami?   earthquake on the ocean floor
🗑
weathering   process in which rock break down
🗑
erosion   process in which rock particles are carried
🗑
seismic waves   earthquake waves that are transmitted through materials in Earth and along the surface of the Earth
🗑
What causes the plates to move? Describe it.   Convection Currents. Hot magma in the mantle becomes less dense and rises to the crust. As the magma cools it sinks and moves the plates along with it.
