Question
Answer
What is the structure of viruses?   DNA/RNA + Capsid (protein coat surrounding and protecting genetic material) *occasionally an envelope of lipids surround the capsid
🗑
How do viruses reproduce?   They have 2 types of replication cycles: Lyptic Cycle Lysogenic Cycle
🗑
What is the lytic cycle?   Virus attaches to a cell Penetrates cell membrane and injects DNA or RNA into cell Host cell replicates the genetic material of the virus Host cell makes new capsids, and viral particles Host cell lyses (breaks open) New viruses leave the cell
🗑
What is the lysogenic cycle?   Viral DNA becomes part of the host cell’s chromosomes The infected cell has viral genes permanently! The viral DNA that has now become part of the host chromosome is called a provirus The viral genes can be activated right away or later on
🗑
What are prions?   just proteins NO RNA or DNA diseases result when they change their shape to go from normal to harmful
🗑
How can viruses be used?   To make a copy of a gene, insert it into a virus and have the host cell copy the gene
🗑
How are viruses classified?   not classified with living things based on: size and shape of capsid type of disease caused
🗑
What are the impacts of viruses?   cause diseases used in biotechnology

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.

To hide a column, click on the column name.

To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.

You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.

Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
