digestion   A process that breaks down the foods that we eat into molecules small enough to be absorbed (taken in) by cells. It can be mechanical or chemical.

peristalsis   The squeezing muscle movements that move food through the organs of the digestive system.

enzyme   "A chemical that speeds up chemical reactions in the body

chyme   The watery mixture of food and gastric juices in the stomach.

chemical digestion   "The process of digesting (breaking down) food

mechanical digestion   "The physical breakdown of food into smaller pieces

mouth   The place where mechanical AND chemical digestion begins. Mechanical: teeth cut and chop food. Chemical: enzymes in saliva start to digest starch.

esophagus   The tube that leads from the mouth to the stomach.

stomach   The pouch-like muscular organ where food gets mixed with gastric juices and churned into a watery paste called chyme. Both mechanical and chemical digestion occur here.

large intestine   "The organ where water is removed from the nutrient-free chyme

rectum   The organ where feces is stored before being removed from the body through the anus.

gall bladder   The accessory organ that produces enzymes for use in the small intestine.

Hydrochloric acid   A strong acid found in gastric juices that helps break down food and kill bacteria.

feces   The material leftover after the large intestine removes the water from the digested chyme.
