Chromosome   Rod-shaped structures made of DNA and proteins.

Histone   A type of protein molecule found in the chromosomes of eukaryotic cells but not prokaryotic cells.

Chromatid   Each half of a chromosome is called this.

Centromere   Where the two chromatids meet.

Chromatin   The less tightly coiled DNA-protein complex.

Sex Chromosome   Chromosomes that determine the sex of an organism and may also carry other genes for other characteristics.

Autosome   All the other chromosomes in an organism.

Homologous Chromosome   The two copies of each autosome.

Karyotype   An array of chromosomes visible in the cell during metaphase.
