Term
Definition
focal plane   A thin layer (plane) at a fixed distance from the objective lens where the image is in focus.
🗑
dry mount   Capturing a specimen between two slides using no water.
🗑
field of view (FOV)   The view of the objects when looking through the eyepiece.
🗑
microscope   A tool used by scientists to make objects appear larger for study.
🗑
wet mount   Mounting a specimen using a drop or drops of water and a coverslip.
🗑
optical power   The total magnification that the microscope is set on. Multiply the eyepiece by the objective lens.
🗑
magnification   The number of times an image is made to look enlarged under the microscope or simple lenses.
🗑
ocular (eyepiece)   The part of the microscope you look through.
🗑
diaphragm   Part of the microscope that is used to adjust the amount of light that enters through the stage of a microscope.
🗑
objective lens   The nosepiece holds 3 or more of these. One is 4x, 10x and 40x.
🗑
total magnification   Find by multiplying the ocular by the objective lens in use.
🗑
millimeter   Smallest metric measurement on a ruler. 10mm = 1cm
🗑
diameter   A straight line across the center of circle.
🗑
orientation   The position of an object.
🗑
appearance   The way the object looks under the microscope compared to how it looks on the stage.
🗑
coarse adjustment knob (focus)   Moves the stage up and down quickly. Use only on LOW POWER.
🗑
fine adjustment knob (focus)   Moves the stage up and down slightly. Use on any power.
🗑
nosepiece   Rotates between the objective lenses.
🗑
slide   Holds the specimen for viewing.
🗑
coverslip   Small piece of plastic used to protect the specimen and microscope.
🗑
inverted   Same as upside down.
