---|---|---|---|---|---|
Ecosystem | A complex, self-regulating system in which living things interact with each other and non-living things.
Ecosystems come in all sizes and are made up of different biotic and abiotic characteristics.
🗑
Healthy ecosystems have... | An energy source, definite boundaries, biodiversity, nutrients, minerals, water, etc.
🗑
Biodiversity | a variety of different organisms with different roles in an ecosystem.
🗑
Sustainable | populations of plants, animals and other living organisms can continue to interact and reproduce indefinitely. Sustainability helps support future generations.
🗑
Stewardship | A way of acting that involves taking personal responsibility for the management and care of something. For example: the environment
🗑
Species | group of organisms that can reproduce with each other, and their offspring are viable.
🗑
Community | populations of different species live and interact in an area where an organism lives.
🗑
Niche | an organisms role in an environment.
🗑
Biomes | large geographical area that contains similar ecosystems. Categorized by average rainfall, temperature and plants.
🗑
how many biomes are in Canada.. | there are 5 terrestrial biomes in Canada and 2 aquatic biomes. Ecosystems combine to make biomes. Biomes combine to make the atmosphere.
🗑
Marine Biomes | marine biomes are found within the ocean, and have a high salt content.
🗑
Fresh water Biomes | fresh water biomes are found within the lakes, streams, rivers and wetlands, and have a low salt content.
🗑
Atmosphere (Air) | layers of gases that surrounds the earth. it contains water, carbon dioxide, oxygen, Ozone, etc. the atmosphere help keep the plants warm.
🗑
Lithosphere (Ground) | earths solid outer layer, includes the rigid crust and upper mantle. It runs 100km down from the surface. It also includes soil.
🗑
Hydrosphere (Water) | ALL of the water on earth. 97% of this water is salt water in the earths oceans. all living things depend on water for survival.
🗑
What sustains life on earth? | Solar energy, the cycling of matter, and gravity.
🗑
Organic Substances | contains atoms of C.H. and many times O.N. (for example: proteins, sugars, fats)
🗑
Inorganic Substances | matter does not contain carbon and H (hydrogen) atoms (For example: nylon, carbon dioxide)
🗑
Decay | Organic minerals die, and then decomposers break them down and then recycle nutrients back to the earth.
🗑
Decomposers | (mushrooms, bread mold, bacteria, fungi) break down organic matter into small inorganic molecules.
