Characterization Terms

Term
Definition
direct characterization   when an author TELLS you a character's trait. For example, "He was a mean person" is direct characterization.

indirect characterization   Hints or clues the author gives. The reader INFERS or guesses a character's traits based on what the character says, thinks, or does.

internal conflict   A struggle a character has in his or her mind about a CHOICE he or she must make

external conflict   A problem a character has with another character, with an animal, with society (the world) or with nature.  
🗑
dynamic character   A character whose dominant character traits change. A character can change for better (from selfish to giving) or for worse (from giving to selfish). What matters is the CHANGE on the inside.

static character   A character whose dominant character traits do NOT change very much at all throughout the story.  
🗑
dominant character traits   A character's most important attributes or personality traits. Words that describe what a characters is like.

To hide a column, click on the column name.

Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
If you know all the data on any row, you can temporarily remove it by tapping the trash can to the right of the row.
