Characterization
Characterization Terms
| Term | Definition |

| direct characterization | when an author TELLS you a character's trait. For example, "He was a mean person" is direct characterization. |
| indirect characterization | Hints or clues the author gives. The reader INFERS or guesses a character's traits based on what the character says, thinks, or does. |
| internal conflict | A struggle a character has in his or her mind about a CHOICE he or she must make |
| external conflict | A problem a character has with another character, with an animal, with society (the world) or with nature. |
| dynamic character | A character whose dominant character traits change. A character can change for better (from selfish to giving) or for worse (from giving to selfish). What matters is the CHANGE on the inside. |
| static character | A character whose dominant character traits do NOT change very much at all throughout the story. |
| dominant character traits | A character's most important attributes or personality traits. Words that describe what a characters is like. |
