Experimental Design and Statistics

Quiz yourself by thinking what should be in each of the black spaces below before clicking on it to display the answer.
        Help!

Term
Definition
Three elements of experimental design   appropriate controls, replication, and randomization of replicates
🗑
Appropriate control   the only factor that is changed is the factor of interest, side by side is ideal, at least 2 variances of the factor, and the same approach must be taken for each factor (ie altering bird eggs)
🗑
Replication   limited by time and money, must be within the same experiment, at least 3 is ideal, replicates must be completely independent of one another so not to accidentally cause pseudoreplication
🗑
Pseudoreplication   mistake of claiming things are replicates when they are not independent of one another
🗑
Randomization   randomizing treatments, positioning, and timing of measurements
🗑
Null Hypothesis   what is seen due to random chance, must have enough evidence to reject
🗑
P-value   probability that the null hypothesis is true, the null hypothesis can be rejected if the value is less than or equal to .05
🗑
Linear regression   only used when a cause and effect relationship is suspected, line of best fit can be added
🗑
Correlation   used when there is an interest in whether there is a linear relationship between two variables, does not purpose cause and effect, never use line of best fit
🗑

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.

To hide a column, click on the column name.

To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.

You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.

Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
If you know all the data on any row, you can temporarily remove it by tapping the trash can to the right of the row.
