Term
Definition
Carrying Capasity   The largest population that an environment can support at any given time.
🗑
Climax community   a stable, mature community that undergoes little or no change in species over time
🗑
Density-dependent factor   A variable affected by the number of organisms present in a given area
🗑
Density-independent factor   a variable that affects a population regardless of the population density, such as climate
🗑
Emigration   The movement of individuals out of a population.
🗑
Exponential Growth Model   The pattern for population increase under ideal conditions. J-shaped growth curve is characteristic. The model assumes resources are unlimited. equation: dN/dt= RmaxN
🗑
Immigration   Movement of individuals into an area occupied by an existing population
🗑
Limiting Factors   any biotic or abiotic factor that restricts the existence, numbers, reproduction, or distribution of organisms
🗑
Logistic Growth Model   a description of idealized population growth that is slowed by limiting factors as the population size increases nad carrying capacity. (S shaped Curve)
🗑
Mortality   The ratio of deaths in an area to the population of that area
🗑
Natality   The ratio of live births in an area to the population of that area
🗑
Population Density   the number of individuals of the same species that live in a given unit of area.
🗑
Primary Succession   succession that begins in an area that previously did not support life
🗑
Secondary Succession   the process by which one community replaces another community that has been partially or totally destroyed

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.

To hide a column, click on the column name.

To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.

You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.

Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
