Term
Definition
atmosphere   An envelope of gases that surrounds the Earth and provides the mixture of gases necessary for all living things to survive.
🗑
troposphere   The layer of Earth’s atmosphere that extends from Earth’s surface to an altitude of about 17 km, has decreasing temperature with increasing altitude, and contains almost all weather.
🗑
stratosphere   The layer of Earth’s atmosphere with an altitude of about 17 km to about 50 km, has increasing temperature with increasing altitude, and contains jet stream and the ozone layer.
🗑
mesosphere   The layer of the atmosphere that is located from about 50 km to about 80 km above Earth’s surface, has decreasing temperature with increasing altitude, and protects us from meteoroids.
🗑
thermosphere   The layer of the atmosphere that is located from about 80 km to thousands of km above Earth’s surface, has increasing temperature with increasing altitude, and is divided into two regions (the Ionosphere and the Exosphere).
🗑
ozone   A molecule that is a special form of oxygen (O3) and acts as a shield from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. A layer of this molecule is found in the stratosphere.
🗑
jet stream   Very high speed winds in the stratosphere that reach speeds of more than 320 km/hour and are caused by differences between cold polar air and warm tropical air.
🗑
convection current   The vertical movement of air in Earth’s atmosphere caused by warmer, less dense air rising and being replaced by cooler, denser air.
🗑
wind   The horizontal movement of air from one place to another in Earth’s atmosphere that is caused by differences in air pressure due to the uneven heating of Earth’s surface.
🗑
ocean currents   Ocean water that moves in streams and is caused by wind at the surface of the ocean or differences in water density deeper down in the ocean.
