hypothesis | A tentative explanation for an observation or scientific problem that can be tested by a scientific experiment.

independent variable | The one factor that is tested in a scientific experiment and the only factor that causes a change in the dependent variable.

dependent variable | The measure of the response or change that has occurred due to a change in the independent variable.

standardized variables | All the factors that must be kept the same in a scientific experiment in order to know that observed changes are due to a change in the independent variable only.

control group | Another set up of a scientific experiment that is exactly the same as the experimental group except it does not have the independent variable applied to it. This purpose of this is to have something to compare the results of the experiment to.
