Atomic Mass   Average mass of one atom of an element.

Periodic Table of Elements   A chart where all elements are organized into periods and groups according to their properites.

Chemical Symbol   One or two letter code that stands for an element; Many symbols are abrieviations of the elements name which maybe English, Latin, or Greek in origin.

Period   A row of elements in the periodic table arranged by atomic number.

Group   Column of elements in the periodic table in which elements have certain properties in common also called chemical family.

Matter   The matter that all objects and substances are made of; Anything that has mass and takes up spae.

Element   Substances that are the building blocks of all matter; An element is made up of one kind of atom.

Compound   Matter nade of two or more elements; The elements in a compound are chemically bonded, cannot be separated by physical means and a compound has properties that are different from the elements that make it up.

Atom   Smallest particle into which an element can be divided and still have the properties of that element.
