Answer (or response)   opposition to someone or something, and thus generally any counter-statement or defense, a reply to a question or response, or objection, or a correct solution of a problem.

Bifurcated Hearing   Bifurcation is a judge's ability in law to divide a trial into two parts so as to render a judgment on a set of legal issues without looking at all aspects. Frequently, civil cases are bifurcated into separate liability and damages proceedings.

Ceremonial Marriage   common form of marriage in which a couple follows laws and procedures specified by the state in order to gain recognition of their marriage

Collaborative Divorce   Both parties are agreeing to the divorce

Common-law Marriage   a form of lawful marriage, so that people cannot be common law spouses, or husband and wife by cohabitation with habit and repute, if one of them was legally married to somebody else when the relationship began.

Defendant (or respondent)   the party against whom a petition is filed, especially one on appeal.

Dissolution or Divorce   the closing down or dismissal of an assembly, partnership, or official body

Domestic Relations   a court that has jurisdiction and often special advisory powers over family disputes involving the rights and duties of husband, wife, parent, or child especially in matters affecting the support, custody, and welfare of children.

Foreign Jurisdiction   the authority to hear and try a case from beyond your own borders.

Guardian ad litem   a person the court appoints to represent the best interests of a child in a divorce or parental rights and responsibilities case.

Invalidity (invalid marriage)   The marriage was false/annulled.

Irreconcilable Differences   you and your spouse can't agree on basic, fundamental issues involving the marriage or your family, and you never will agree.

Joint Custody   custody of a child is awarded to both parties

Legal Custody   type of child custody that grants a parent the right to make important, long-term decisions regarding their child or children.

No-fault Divorce   It is a divorce in which neither husband nor wife needs to prove the cause of dissolution of marriage

Petition (or complaint)   A written application from a person or persons to some governing body or public official asking that some authority be exercised to grant relief

Physical Custody   the child lives with only one parent.  
🗑
Plaintiff (or Petitioner)   the party who presents a petition to the court  
🗑
Putative Spouse   an apparently valid marriage, entered into in good faith on the part of at least one of the partners, but that is legally invalid due to a technical impediment, such as a preexistent marriage on the part of one of the partners.
