pioneer species | hardy, fast-growing species such as moss, lichen, and bacteria that are the first organisms to take hold during primary succession

secondary succession | quicker growth of an ecosystem in an area that was previously inhabited by living organisms but may have been destroyed by fire, flood, etc. (Usually there are some seeds or other nutrients left to build on again)
