local extinction   when a species dies out only in a certain region but exists somewhere else

conservation biology   discipline that brings together many fields to attempt to prevent extinction of species, destruction of ecosystems, & other biodiversity problems

sustainability   when economic needs are met while also protecting the environment

poaching   illegally hunting certain species, usually for profit  
🗑
climax community   ecosystem that is mature & will remain stable if left alone

barren   bare land, without soil or living things growing on or in it  
🗑
primary succession   slow process of building an ecosystem in an area that is barren and has never had any kind of soil or life there before;takes hundreds to thousands of years

pioneer species   hardy, fast-growing species such as moss, lichen, and bacteria that are the first organisms to take hold during primary succession  
🗑
secondary succession   quicker growth of an ecosystem in an area that was previously inhabited by living organisms but may have been destroyed by fire, flood, etc. (Usually there are some seeds or other nutrients left to build on again)
