Barrier Islands   Pieces of land surrounded by water. They have sandy beaches. Their natural function is to protect the mainland from effects of waves on shore.

Beaches   Shorelines made of sand. Shorelines are always changing due to waves and currents.

Salt Marshes   Found in estuaries. They act like a sponge during storms to soak up excess water.

Sediment   Weathered down material carried by water or wind.

Sand Dunes   These sweep up in mounds. Plant's rots hold these in place.

Currents   Ongoing movements of water.

Tides   The level of water which rises and falls every day.

Waves   Repeated movement of water lapping against the shore.

Ocean Shore Zone   Made up of barrier islands, inlets, beaches, estuaries, salt marshes, sediment, sand dunes, currents, tides, and waves.
