Initial Symptoms of Shock   Cold, clammy skin (hands and feet initially); pale or cyanotic skin; weak, fast pulse rate; fast rate of breathing; low blood pressure. A variety of other symptoms may be present, but they are dependent on the underlying cause of shock.

Treatment of Shock   Depending on the type of shock different treatents will be used. First you need to find out what type of shock you are treating.

Treatment of HYPOVOLEMIC Shock   Stop the bleeding if there is any present. Keep pt warm, with legs raised, administer oxygen and prepare to replace fluids with Normal Saline, Lactated Ringers, or Blood Transfusions(Not often seen in the field). Large bore IV's, bilaterally if available.

Treatment of SEPTIC Shock   In the field, there is little you can do. Pt will need antibiotics and definitive care. Apply O2, maintain body temperature due to possibility of extreme heat loss in sepsis patients, check BGL, IV's & fluids, Transport.

Treatment of CARDIOGENIC Shock   Correction of electrolyte and acid-base abnormalities, such as hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, and acidosis, is essential in cardiogenic shock & will be treated at the facility. O2, keep pt warm, DO NOT USE TRENDELENBURG, IV's, transport immediately.
