Betamethasone (corticosteroid)   Preterm labor to enhance fetal lung maturity and surfactant production/maternal and neonate hyperglycemia, pulmonary edema, and heart rate changes in the neonate

Oxytocin (Pitocin)   To induce labor at term or augment uterine contractions in the first and second stages/placental abruption, impaired uterine blood flow, rapid labor leading to maternal and fetal trauma, uterine rupture, water intoxication.

Naloxone (Narcan)   Reverses narcotic related respiratory depression in mother and neonate.

Nifedipine (Procardia)   Tocolytic usedfor treatment of preterm labor. Less side effects when given oral or sublingually/common side effects hypotension,tachycardia, facial flushing, headache. Should NOT be used with Mag Sulfate due to serious effects of low calcium levels.

Indocin (indomethacin), Clinoril (sulindac), Celebrex (celecoxib)   Prostaglandin Inhibitors used to suppress uterine contractions. Potential fetal side effects:constriction of ductus arteriosus, NEC, intravascular hemorrhage. Should NOT be administered after 32 weeks gestation!

Magnesium Sulfate (tocolytic,anticonvulsant)   For treatment of preterm labor and preeclampsia/sweating, flushing, nasal congestion, nausea & vomiting, visual blurring, headache and slurred speech.
