cell   smallest functional and structural unit of all organisms.

cell membrane   Protects the inside of the cell from the environment around the cell and regulates what enters/leaves the cell.

cytoplasm   Area between cell memberane and nucleus, all organelles located here.

organelle   Found in cytoplasm, perform a specific function.

nucleus   Contains the genetic information of the cell.

prokaryote   Single celled organisms with NO nucleus or membrane-bound organelles and is smaller than a eukaryote

eukaryote   Organism made up of cells that contain their DNA in a nucleus and have membrane-bound organelles, many are multicellular.

cell theory   States that organisms are made up of one or more cells, cells are the basic unit of life, and that all cells come from other cells.

mitosis   Process of cell division where an equal number of chromosomes are separated and the nucleus splits to form two identical nucli.

chromosomes   Threadlike structure in the nucleus that carries DNA.

mitochondria   Produce energy for the cell. Breaks down food molecules to release energy by cellular respiration.

chloroplasts   Uses carbon dioxide, water and sunlate to make food by photosynthesis.

cell wall   Found in plant cells. Supports and protects the cell.
