What is labor?   It is the process of moving the fetus, placenta, and membranes out of the uterus and into the birth canal. It includes alternating periods of rest and recovery

What causes labor?   The exact cause is not known, but there are 3 theories: Progesterone Withdrawal, Increased Release of Prostaglandins, and Increased Oxytocin Sensitivities. All lead to cervical dilation

What is the Progesterone Withdrawal theory of labor?   Estrogen-Progesterone ratio changes = Estrogen Increases & Progesterone Decreases.

What is the Increased Release of Prostaglandins theory of labor?   Increased Prostaglandins stimulates contractions and softens the cervix.

What is the Increased Oxytocin Sensitivities theory of labor?   Indicates an increased number of Oxytocin receptors at the end of pregnancy.

What are the Premonitory Signs of Labor?   Bloody show (rupt cerv memb), Cerv ripening, lightening (occur w/fetal engage, sudden burst of energy (increased epinephrine), Braxton-Hicks (relieved by walking),Diarrhea,Indigestion or N/V, ROM, Wt loss of 1-3 lbs.d/t F&E loss/shft d/t Increase Estrogen

What is True labor?   Contractions at regular intervals, Inc. in duration & intensity, and do not go away with rest or warm tub bath.
