Access Copyright | An agency that licences copyrights for the government, educational institutions, businesses, and other organizations.

Copyright | The protection of the expression of ideas for the author/ creator. It allows the author/ creator the exclusive rights to sell, change, or market the idea.

Intellectual Property | Defines properties that are not necessarily physical in nature and are usually creations of the mind. Examples of this are song lyrics and literary works.

Royalty | Payments that one makes to the creator/ author of a product in order to use the product under the terms of the author. Usually a percentage based on the number of usages.

Trade-marks | A type of intellectual property right that is used to distinguish and protect the products and services of a person or company. An example of this is slogans.

Public Domain | Refers to property that is free for the public to use. This could be because the copyright has expired or is inapplicable.

Moral Rights | Rights of the creators/ author of the copyrighted material. Example of this are the right to use your name, a fake name, or remain anonymous, and the right to attribution.

Performing Rights | When a group/ individual performs a live song in public that is not their own, they are required to pay the composer[s] of the original piece a royalty.

Plagiarism | Using a copyrighted item in a manner that is not permitted under the Copyright Act and not attributing the item to the actual creator.

Fair Dealing | Describes numerous exceptions to copyright infringement. This includes using material for education, religion, research, and private study.

Patent | A type of intellectual property right that protects an artists invention or new idea. Protects the functions of the idea, not the aesthetics.

Blanket Licence | A licence that covers a large number of intellectual properties where a licence on each individual item would not be possible. An example of where this exists is in the radio/ music industry.
