Multiple Casualty Incident   Also known as a Mass Casualty Incident, an MCI is any event that places excessive demands on personnel and equipment. Usually involves Three or more patients.

Incident Commander   The individual who commands the aspects of the incident.

Incident Command System   A concept that has become standard for on-scene management of disasters and MCI's

National Incident Management System   Provides a consistent approach to managing disasters by all responders, Local, state and federal.

Primary Triage   Occurs immediately after the first EMS unit arrives.

Secondary Triage   Patients are reevaluated here and, if necessary re-categorized.

Staging Unit   Where Ambulances, helicopters and additional equipment are held until assigned to a task.

Transport Unit   Where patients are loaded and transported by ambulances or helicopters.

Treatment Unit   Where less serious patients are treated before transport.

Triage   The system used for determining the order patients will be treated.

Triage Unit   Sorts patients by level of Criticality, and assigns priorities for transport and care.
