| Palpitation | An abnormality of heartbeat that causes a conscious awareness of it's beating whether it's too slow, to fast, irregular, or at its normal frequency.

| Automaticity | Automatic response pattern.

| Stroke volume | Volume of blood pumped from one ventricle of the heart with each beat? It is calculated by subtracting the volume blood in the ventricle at the end of the beat (end systolic volume) from the volume of blood just prior to the beat (end diastolic volume).

| Angina | Chest pain due to ischemia (the lack of blood and hence oxygen) in the heart muscle.

| Q wave infarction | Acute myocardial infarction that occurs during the period when circulation to to a region of the heart is obstructed and necrosis is occurring.

| Tachycardia | A heart rate that exceeds the normal range for a resting heart rate.

| Bradycardia | Defined as a resting heart rate of below 60 BMP. It is seldom symptomatic until the rate drops below 50 BMP.

| Angioplasty | Technique of mechanically widening a narrowed or obstructed blood vessel; typically as a result of atherosclerosis. Tightly folded balloons are passed into narrowed locations and inflated to a fixed size using water pressures some 75-500 times normal BP.

| Annuloplasty | a cardiac surgery procedure performed by cardiac surgeons to treat stenosis (narrowing) or regurgitation (leakage) of the mitral valve.

| Heart failure | a condition in which a problem with the structure or function of the heart impairs its ability to supply sufficient blood flow to meet the body's needs.

| Stenosis | an abnormal narrowing in a blood vessel or other tubular organ or structure.

| Valvuloplasty | the repair of a stenotic aortic valve using a balloon catheter inside the valve.

| cardiac tamponade | AKA:pericardial tamponade. Emergency condition when fluid accumulates in the pericardium (the sac in which the heart is enclosed). If the fluid significantly elevates the pressure on the heart it will prevent the heart's ventricles from filling properly.

| Aneurysm | a localized, blood-filled dilation (balloon-like bulge) of a blood vessel caused by disease or weakening of the vessel wall.

| Embolectomy | the removal of a blockage in a blood vessel: the surgical removal of an embolus, usually a blood clot or other obstruction, in a blood vessel.

| Thrombolytics | drugs are used in medicine to dissolve blood clots in a procedure termed thrombolysis. They limit the damage caused by the blockage of the blood vessel.

| Hypertension | a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure is elevated. It is also referred to as high blood pressure.

| Ankle-brachial index | Ratio of BP in the lower legs to BP in arms. Compared to the arm, lower BP in the leg is a sxs of blocked arteries (peripheral vascular disease). It's calculated by dividing the SBP in the arteries @ the ankle &foot by the higher of the 2 SBP in the arms.

| Afterload | Tension produced by a chamber of the heart in order to contract.
