Afterload   The forces that impede the flow of blood out of the heart. Composed of pressure in peripheral vasculature, compliance of the aorta, and the mass/viscosity of the blood.

Compliance   The ease with which the heart muscle relaxes as it fills with blood

Contractility   The force with which the left ventricle contraction occurs. It is independent of the effects of preload or afterload

Hemodynamics   A study of the forces involved in circulating blood through the body
