| Erosion | the wearing away of the land by the process of water, wind, or ice |
| Transportation | the process whereby the river moves its load |
| Deposition | the process whereby the river drops material when it lacks energy to transport it's load |
| Attrition | when boulders bash together and break into smaller pieces |
| hydraulic action | the force of the water dislodges particles from the river's beds and banks |
| corrasion | material in suspension wears away the banks in a sand papering action (aka abrasion) |
| corrosion | the acids in the river dissolve the rocks in the bed and the banks of the river |
| traction | rolling stones (needs lots of energy) |
| saltation | bouncing or leap-frogging motion of sand sized material |
| suspension | silt and clay sized material carried within the water flow |
| solution | material which has been dissolved in the water and carried within the waterflow |
| discharge | measured in cumecs |
